The Dell PowerEdge 2850 is a versatile dual socket 2U rackmount server ideal for just about any standard small business application. The PowerEdge 2850 can be equipped with up to two 64-bit single or dual core Intel Xeon processors, up to 16GB RAM and 1.8TB of SCSI storage, providing loads of scalability. With dual onboard gigabit NIC’s and a mixture of either PCIe or PCI-X slots, the PowerEdge 2850 has the connectivity to be deployed for a number of uses such as file/print, firewall, network storage, web, database, messaging and other applications.

The PowerEdge 2850 is designed for high-availability, 24/7 situations. It has hot-pluggable everything, including drives (up to six), cooling fans, power supplies, and even memory banks. The 2850’s memory mirroring and Spare Bank memory slots even allow IT techs to keep a spare set of memory sticks preinstalled, ready to cut over automatically if another set fails. This can greatly reduce system crashes caused by memory failure and can keep crucial e-commerce up and running.

The server we reviewed came with a PCI-X card riser chassis, which prepares the 2850 for the PCI Express cards that should become more prevalent before the end of the year. (The PCI-X riser can be swapped out for a PCI Express at a later date.) Like the fans, drives, and power supplies, these card slots are hot-swappable, helping the 2850’s always-on capabilities. The 2850’s chassis is well laid out for both serviceability and airflow. In fact, airflow is improved to the point that the 2850’s fans can run much more slowly than those in its 2650 predecessor, leading to a much quieter server.

Another always-on benefit comes from the Dell Remote Access Card 4 upgrade option. Unlike software-based remote control software, the DRAC4 allows the system admin to access the server remotely, even if the operating system is irretrievably crashed. An admin can then boot the system remotely with a virtual boot disk (located in the DVD-ROM drive, USB key disk, or even on another server) and then use that disk to reinitialize the server.

The motherboard is built around an Intel E7520 chipset with an 800MHz frontside bus and two processor slots capable of accommodating both single-core and the latest dual-core Xeon EM64T chips. The single core processors can be clocked at up to 3.6GHz, while there’s a 2.8GHz limit on the dual-cores, a pair of which were fitted on our review system.

Maximum memory is 16GB, although our system shipped with a more modest (yet still reasonable) 2GB of 400MHz DDR2 SDRAM; as you’d expect, ECC protection is provided as standard. Memory mirroring is yet another option, but this requires at least four memory modules (our system had just two), halves the amount of available memory and boosts the price significantly.

Still, the PE2850 isn’t overly expensive product, and there’s the added bonus that much of what you need in a server comes integrated onto the PE2850 motherboard. This includes a pair of Gigabit Ethernet interfaces and a more than adequate ATI Radeon video controller. Further options can then be added via the three expansion slots, the exact nature of which depend on the type of riser fitted.

As installed on the review model, for example, the default is a PCI-Express riser with one four-lane and one eight-lane PCI Express slot, plus a single 64-bit/100MHz PCI-X connector. Alternatively you can specify a PCI-X riser with three 64-bit/133MHz slots, with a basic hardware RAID controller also provided on both cards.

The dual 3.6-GHz Xeons and 15,000-rpm drives in our test unit led to good performance. On our WebBench tests, the 2850 peaked at much heavier workloads than did the 1U single processors we tested a year ago. This is partly because of the dual processors and partly because of the newer CPU/memory architecture. The 2850 could handle many more requests per second and much higher throughput than last year’s servers, and the points where the performance numbers started to peak occurred much further along in our test cycle: Last year’s servers started to plateau at 16 virtual clients on our static and dynamic CGI tests; the 2850 peaks out at 24 clients. On our NetBench test, the 2850 performed quite well, justifying the expense of the SCSI drives. Suffice it to say that if you are still running PIII-based Xeons, now may be the time to upgrade.
