The R730xd server offers a significant growth in Performance over the previous generation Dell PowerEdge R720xd and significantly more storage and storage configuration choices than the R730. While the R730 can handle up to 16 2.5-inch or 8 3.5-inch HDDs or SSDs that the R730xd supports nearly two times as much storage up to 24 2.5-inch or 16 3.5-inch HDDs or SSDs and even offers a Hybrid setup.

Small Review of Dell R730xd Server :

For this review we were provided 5 3.5-inch HDDs and 5 1.8-inch SSDs. The R730xd utilizes a panel using six status indictors at the top-left that can be used to start monitoring system errors. A system identification button causes the button itself and the machine status indicator on the back of the unit to flash blue until a system ID button is pushed. The front USB port is USB 2.0 while the back are USB 3.0.

The R730xd supports up to 2 Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 processors up to eighteen execution cores per processor and it can use up to 24 DDR4 DIMMS with around 768GB of memory foam. DIMM slots are situated directly on the motherboard. The PowerEdge R730xd supports enrolled DIMMS and load decreased LRDIMMs (LRDIMMs), which utilize a buffer to reduce memory loading and supply greater density. Certified 64GB DIMMs are expected to be available in the not too distant future, permitting a maximum memory capacity of 1.5TB.

An internal dual-SD module (IDSDM) empowers customers to deploy Dell’s Failsafe Virtualization technology, which offers failover redundancy for embedded hypervisors.

The back of the server offers access to three low-profile PCIe 3.0 expansion slots on the left as well as two full-height PCIe slots in the center and a third full-height PCIe slot for their right. This server includes dual 750W power supplies at bottom right and a vFlash press card slot in top-right. Two added 2.5-inch drive bays are accessible from the back of the server via an optional bend bay which can provide SAS, SATA, or nearline SAS connectivity.

The R730xd may be configured with four incorporated 10/100/1000Mbps NIC interfaces or two integrated 10/100/1000Mbps ports and two incorporated 100Mbps/1Gbps/10Gbps SFP+ connectors via Dell Network Daughter Cards (NDC). Dell intends to create an InfiniBand NDC available in Q1 of 2015.

Advantages of Dell R730xd Server:

There are three basic chassis configurations to choose from. The chassis setup using 12 3.5-inch HDDs provides a maximum of 99.6 Terabytes of storage. An optional Hybrid supports 18 1.8-inch fronts available SATA SSDs for quick access and up to eight 3.5-inch SAS SSDs for high capacity storage, for a total capability of 68.5TB. Internal dual-SD modules provide hypervisor redundancy for the discretionary embedded hypervisors with Dell’s Failsafe Virtualization technology. Several RAID controllers can be found supporting a full the range of RAID options. This system can also be compatible with SDS (software Defined Storage) solutions like VMware and vSAN and OpenStack.

The System supports DDR4 memory and also when used with certain E5-2600 v4 processors, can provide a data transfer rate of around 2400MT/s. There are three memory sockets per station that support either enrolled (RDIMM) or load reduced (LRDIMM) modules. In a two processor configuration, up to 3.0TB of memory can be obtained using 128GB DIMM modules.
