Review of Dell Precision T7910 Workstation

T7910 has two Xeon E5-2687W V3 processors, each with 10 cores running at 3.1Ghz. Irrespective of which CPU speed you select, always fill both sockets of a high-end workstation, as that doubles your memory bandwidth and empowers the previous two PCIe slots. Therefore, select dual 4-core CPUs rather than just one 8-core CPU, if this is the performance level you’re after. It’s 128GB of all DDR4 memory, divided around eight sticks which are 16GB each. Irrespective of size, maximum performance is achieved with as many sticks of RAM since there are memory channels. This system has four memory channels per CPU, for a total of eight channels. I would advise at least 64GB of RAM for many editing systems, with much more for larger jobs. Since we had been cutting an entire feature with 6K source documents, 128GB was a reasonable choice that served us well.

Both our systems are usually fairly quiet, which is remarkable considering how successful they are. They do create heat, and that I don’t suggest running them in a room without AC, but has been out of our hands. Air-cooled systems are just as powerful as the environment they’re in, and our situation wasn’t necessarily optimal.

PCIe SSDs are a massive leap forward for storage throughput. This workstation came with a PCIe x16 Gen3 card that supports up to four M.2 NVMe SSDs at full rate. This permits up to 2500MB/s from each of the four ports, which will be enough bandwidth to perform back 6K DPXs in 24p in Premiere without dropping frames.

Now capacity is limited with this new expensive technology, topping out at 1TB a $700 card. My 512GB card may only save seven minutes of information at max throughput, but also for smaller data sets, like VFX shots, this also allows a system to cache meaningful quantities of data at very high speed without having a large variety of disks to maintain the required I/Os.

Once we open the tool-less case, one of those obvious visual differences between the Dell and HP options is the Precision 7910 divides the PCIe slots, together with two over the CPUs and five below. I presume the advantages to this are shorter circuit paths into the CPUs and better cooling for hot cards. It hasn’t made a big difference to mepersonally, but it’s well worth noting. Like other dual-socket systems, two of those slots are disabled if the next CPU isn’t installed.

Advantage of Dell Precision T7910 Workstation

The T7910 workstation supports An abundance of storage up to four 3.5-inch SATA or eight 2.5-inch SATA/SAS drives supported. One of the two outside media bays can also be converted to encourage up to four extra 2.5-inch drives. The system will also support optional PCIe SSD drives and four or two M.two PCIe NVMe SSDs which are four times faster than conventional SATA SSD storage and supported on the Dell Precision Ultra-Speed Drive Duo or Quad storage solutions. An optional PCIe controller is required for RAID 5 support.

Quad-channel memory supports up To 1TB with two CPUs. There are 16 memory slots complete, with 8 slots allocated to each CPU. Both RDIMMs and LRDIMMS are supported but cannot be mixed. Memory modules of different capacities can be mixed but populated channels must have the exact same configuration. Memory rates of up to 2400MHz are encouraged but must be paired with an proper v4 processor, rate of processing defaults into the slowest performer involving the memory modules and CPUs.

Dell’s 7910 workstation Includes the Intel C612 chipset to support dual Xeon E5-2600 v4 and E5-2600 v3 processors. With two processors around 1TB of DDR4 ECC memory modules could be installed. The system is extremely expandable. Users can begin with just a single processor and include another as perform demands change. This is a somewhat silent system but acoustical performance could be improved by up to 38% having a optional liquid cooling solution.

The Dell Precision T7910 Workstation is extremely expandable and flexible to your changing workloads. Users can begin with just 1 processor and scale to 2 processors as work needs change. Offering Dell’s tool-less accessibility to components also makes Shifting out or upgrading components a breeze. With Powerful 2-socket Performance, ISV certification, and VR-ready features the Dell T7910 is an Excellent selection for professionals in a variety of disciplines.
